Los Cafres is one of the founding bands of Latin American reggae. Formed in 1987 in Buenos Aires, it was a pioneer in interpreting roots reggae in Spanish. Currently the group tours its native Argentina and the Latin Region, bringing its proposal to fans across the continent.
Throughout its history, the group has released 14 albums, many of which topped the sales charts and surpassed Gold and Platinum status.
Los Cafres debuted in 1987 in a pub in the Barrio Norte of the city of Buenos Aires. Composed largely of musicians who worked in other bands, Los Cafres' line-up was relatively unstable and their shows were sporadic. In August 1989 they gave the last show of their early days and said goodbye until better times, since the delicate situation that Argentina was going through prompted several of its members to seek new horizons in other countries.
Telephone through Guillermo Bonetto he was in charge of keeping the flame of Los Cafres burning, insisting to his former adventure companions that the group had much more to give. So it was that during 1992 Los Cafres slowly took shape again and in November they returned to the stage. In 1994 the band recorded their first album: "Frecuencia Cafre". The appearance of this album not only marked a break in the history of Argentine reggae, as it became the first conceived by a local band entirely in the vein of "roots reggae", but it was also the first roots reggae album in Spanish of the to be registered worldwide.
At the end of 1995 they presented their second album, "Instinto", and shortly after, with the tracks from this work, they released "Instinto DUB", the first dub album made in Argentina. "Instinto" was chosen in 2009 by the Argentine edition of Rolling Stone magazine as the Best Record in the History of Argentine Reggae.
In subsequent years they released "Suena la Alarma" (1997), "Espejitos" (2000) and "Vivo a lo Cafre" (2004). Although they were already recognized as the main band of their genre in Argentina, just with the appearance of "Quién da más?" (2004) Los Cafres became popular and massive. Later would come the release of "Luna Park" (2006), his second live album, and "Barrilete" and "Hombre Simple", released simultaneously in 2007.
At the end of 2009 "Classic Lover Covers" appeared, made up of rock and pop classics covered to the rhythm of reggae. In 2011 they released the double album “El paso gigante” and in 2013, to celebrate their 25-year career, they released “Los Cafres-25 Años de música”, material that won the Gardel Award (Argentina) in the Best DVD category.
In 2016 the group presented the album "Alas Canciones", produced by Guillermo Bonetto and Claudio Illobre. The material was acclaimed throughout the continent and the first single Sé q ́el mar reached the top of the broadcast charts in Argentina, in addition to having a simultaneous premiere and strong rotation on the most important radio stations in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Costa Rica. . The album was nominated at the Latin Grammy Awards in the Best Recording Engineering category.
To all this, throughout their history Los Cafres also participated in numerous compilations, including "Tribute to Bob Marley" (2004) and "You know how I expected you" Tribute to Los Fabulosos Cádillacs "(2009).
In March 2019 the band began recording a triple album, to celebrate its three decades of history. The ambitious project was baptized "Los Cafres Hoy 3Décadas" and contemplated the staggered release of the three volumes on digital platforms, to finally edit them together physically. Volume 1 was published in August 2019, and included the songs Tu Meta and La Flor, among others. The release of Volume 2 was scheduled for mid-2020 and among the advances were topics such as Nature and "How to see?", but the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 forced a rethinking of everything planned.
After the worst moment of the Coronavirus, with great expectations from the public and the press, Los Cafres returned to the stage exhibiting their best version in the official presentation of Hoy 3Décadas Volume 1, on October 1, 2021 at the Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires , but two weeks later, a health problem for singer and leader Guillermo Bonetto forced the band to go on hiatus that lasted for a year.
Finally, Los Cafres returned in October 2022, with presentations in Peru and Colombia.
Currently, Los Cafres are: Guillermo Bonetto (voice), Claudio Illobre (keyboards) and Gonzalo Albornoz (bass), plus Manuel Fernández Castaño (sax), Willy Rangone (trumpet), Víctor Raffo (rhythm guitar), Demian Marcelino (lead guitar ) and Iván Mustapich (drums).

En marzo de 2019 la banda comenzó a grabar un álbum triple, para celebrar sus tres décadas de historia. El ambicioso proyecto fue bautizado “Los Cafres Hoy 3Décadas” y contemplaba la salida escalonada de los tres volúmenes en plataformas digitales, para finalmente editarlos juntos físicamente. El volumen 1 se publicó en agosto de 2019 e incluyó las canciones Tu Meta y La Flor, entre otras. El lanzamiento del Volumen 2 estaba previsto para mediados de 2020 y entre los avances estaban temas como Naturaleza y “¿Cómo ver?”, pero la pandemia de COVID-19 en marzo de 2020 obligó a repensar todo lo planeado.
Luego del peor momento del Coronavirus, con gran expectativa por parte del público y la prensa, Los Cafres regresaron a los escenarios exhibiendo su mejor versión en la presentación oficial de Hoy 3Décadas Volumen 1, el 1 de octubre de 2021 en el Teatro Gran Rex de Buenos Aires, pero dos semanas después, un problema de salud del cantante y líder Guillermo Bonetto obligó a la banda a tomar una pausa que duró un año.
Finalmente, Los Cafres regresaron en octubre de 2022, con presentaciones en Perú y Colombia.
